Max Brem leads CIGI's publication strategy. The role includes creating and implementing strategies that encompass all written outputs stemming from CIGI's research program activities. He was formerly Senior Director of Communications.
Educated mainly in New Zealand, Mr. Brem worked as a journalist and editor in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong and went on to study economics and development sociology at US universities, graduating with an MA from the New School for Social Research in New York City. He spent several years in post-graduate studies at Binghamton University. He subsequently taught for five years at Ryerson Polytechnic in Toronto, and in 1983 joined The North-South Institute in Ottawa, becoming its first director of publications and communications. For more than a decade he has provided consulting services to policy and program branches of the Canadian International Development Agency and other national and international organizations. He has written numerous articles and briefing papers, edited books, and undertaken a wide range of research and communications projects. Between 2000 and 2005, Max was director of external relations in the Faculty of Environmental Studies at York University, Toronto, and he is currently a nonresident research associate of the York University Centre for Asian Research.
